Wedding flowers can transform your wedding, they are a key part of your wedding theme and styling. Here are some of our top tips after years of photographing flowers at weddings.

1. Decide on your wedding dress before your bouquet.

It’s a good idea to choose your wedding dress before your flowers. Show your floral designer a photo of your dress and a fabric sampler so they can recommend a bouquet style, shape and colours to coordinate and be perfect for the line of your dress.

While you’re at it, show your floral designer photos of your your bridesmaids dress style, take a fabric sampler too.

2. Ask how easy will be to carry your bouquet.

Once your dressed and ready, you’ll have your bouquet with you until you reach your wedding reception. How heavy is it? Is it easy to hold? If your bouquet is too big, it’s weight and diameter of the stem can cause fatigue. It may also hide beautiful detail on your wedding dress.

3. Ask your floral designer to recommend the best seasonal flowers for you.

Choosing flowers that are in season on your wedding day may be best for their longevity and your budget. Your floral designer will be able to advise you what flowers will be in season on your wedding date.

Your bouquet could be out of water for up to 6 hours, some flower varieties will last the distance better than others.

4. Choose your flowers with your heart.

What are your favourite flowers? Do you remember the first bouquet of flowers your partner sent you? What were they? Choosing flowers with your heart will make them even more memorable.

5. Use your flowers to transform your wedding reception.

I’ve seen guests enter wedding receptions absolutely astounded at the flowers adorning the table settings. Julie Vine transformed Anastasia and Nick’s wedding reception at Lurleen’s Sirromet Winery into a floral wonderland. Floral arrangements can totally transform a venue and mark it with your own personal style. Your floral designer can recommend what to do and work with your venue.

The photos here are some of our favourites. To make sure your wedding flowers are all they could be, getting the right advice from a floral designer is essential. Two of our favourites floral designers are Julie from Julie Vine Flowers and Kate from Kates Dawes Flower Design.

When choosing flowers for your wedding, Kate from Kate Dawes Flower Design has some simple advice… ”Follow your heart……choose a style of bouquet….(neat and tidy or garden picked etc) along with a colour pallet then let me create something unique  just for you with seasonally available flowers”.

So when the time is right for you in your wedding planning, why not chat with some floral designers about what you’re trying to create for your wedding. They’ll love to find out what inspires you, the flowers you’re dreaming of, how many bridesmaids you’re having and if you want to decorate your ceremony and reception venues. making your wedding unique with individual touches is their specialty so have fun!
