I worry at times about what is going on in Australia. We are an amazing people, we have a beautiful environment, today so much structural change is happening that will shape the future we pass on to our kids.

For many years, Aussie icons have been lost to new overseas owners. It seems every week now we receive news of the difficulty local manufacturers and big companies have in keeping profitable operations in Australia. The continued strength of the Aussie dollar is being blamed for Aussie manufactured goods becoming uncompetitive on world markets.

Combine this with the internet enabling services to be delivered from afar where wages and conditions are far less than in Australia, you can see it makes economic sense to send manufacturing, call centre and admin operations offshore. Holden, Ford, Alcoa, Westpac Bank and ANZ Bank are current examples.

The retail sector is struggling. High rents, staff wages and constant sales have slashed margins. Consumers have embraced online purchasing, seduced by the reality of cheaper goods from overseas suppliers, there is no GST to pay on orders under $1,000 either.

What’s the end result of all this? Immediate job losses and ultimately the capability to innovate and manufacture and employ people in this country.

Here are a few questions to consider…

Is there more to life than making “economic sense”?

Is profitability at all costs the only goal?

Is there a social or moral responsibility for large high profit companies?

Economies are a delicate balance between providing profits for companies, employment for communities, goods and services to consumers, ongoing growth and environmental sustainability.

Get the balance wrong and people suffer.

I frequently receive emails from overseas album manufacturers and local reps promising quality albums at bargain basement prices. I could save a heap of dollars sourcing from China. I’ve done side by side comparisons, the look and feel of cheap import albums is totally underwhelming. I want more for my clients.

I proudly use Brisbane manufacturers and suppliers.

I love the relationship I have with my album manufacturer, Photo Mounts and Albums. A Brisbane family business, their factory is less than 10km from my studio. We work together to create beautiful products for my clients. Owners and directors Michael and Ioanna Zervos listen to what I want, make innovative suggestions and deliver what I need for my clients. I love that I can head down to the factory, have a chat over a coffee about all things wedding and discuss ideas for innovative products. When our albums are in production, we often pop into the factory to see how production is going.

It is this commitment to quality that helped contribute to us winning a Silver with Distinction Award in the 2011 Epson AIPP Queensland Wedding Album of the Year competition.

When your wedding album is being made, there is a lot of hands-on love and care included. Quality control is paramount, it has to be just right. Does this cost more than what I could source overseas? Absolutely, I believe you deserve the best.
