Holden vs Ford, Red vs Blue, an age old war in Australia.

As a lifelong “Holden man”, going to the V8 Supercars has always been lots of fun, especially so the days when I have taken my son Alex to watch with me. We travel the track, seeking out those vantgage points offering the best view of the action and hope of “possible carnage” on the track. Tracks we have been to include Bathurst, Phillip Island, Sandown, Eastern Creek, Willowbank, and Indy.

Sadly, today marks the 5th anniversary of my long time favourite driver Peter “Perfect” Brock. I grew up watching Bathurst on the telly longing to one day be there to watch in person. Peter was so approachable, always happy to say hello to everyone and sign autographs. I have told my son stories of how Brocky could nurse a wounded car to the finish line… into first place. He had great mechanical sympathy.

We were in the massive crowd at Bathurst in 2006, it was just over a month since his passing and the air was filled with emotion, grown mountain men were crying. A parade of his winning cars went past, one by one, memories came flooding back. My favourite, the VK Commodore of 1994, what a beast.

It wasn’t to be a Holden Victory, Skaifey crashed on the first lap. I’m glad Lowndsey won that day, fitting really being a kid mentored by Brock. Tears were shed on the podium, and in the crowd, we all missed Brock!

I have been sorting through my archives and found some Brocky images including some from the 2003 when there was the Australian Nations Cup Championship. This was an awesome category which brought together among others Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and the legendary Holden Monaro in a thumping 7.0 litre spec.

Some of these images were taken at Queensland Raceway at Willowbank and are so special as it was a day when Alex in his red race suit met motor racing legend, the late Peter Brock. Not only did Peter drive his Monaro, he also did hot laps in his 1987 Bathurst winning VL Commodore.

I hope you enjoy these images from my personal motor sport collection.

RIP Peter Brock.
