Saint Mary’s Anglican Church at Kangaroo Point is a surprise to many. Hidden away on top of Kangaroo Point overlooking the Brisbane River, how many drivers battling inbound traffic on the Story Bridge know it’s there? I’ve been photographing weddings at St Mary’s for 20 years now, there have been some massive changes around Kangaroo Point in this time. The most significant is the demolition of the old TAFE College which contributed to keeping the church hidden away.

Saint Mary’s dates back to 1873, it features beautiful sandstone walls and a timber ceiling. Photographically, it’s a gem with lots of interesting features to include in the photos.

As a wedding photographer, you have to be organised, hence I’m usually one of the first to arrive to photograph the groom and his attendants before the guests arrive. Candid images before the ceremony share how everyone is feeling, a blend of excitement and nerves for some.

The aisle is quite narrow at Saint Mary’s, if you’re the bride with a full skirt, it will fill the aisle as you walk down.

As you can see in these photos, Saint Mary’s is beautiful inside adding an old world charm to the images.

After the ceremony, enjoying celebratory drinks on the lawn overlooking the Brisbane River with views of the city is a highlight for everyone, I usually capture some candid images and lots of laughs for my brides and grooms.

Family photos are best around the side of the church, mums always love these images. Exactly where we go depends on the light, it can be dappled depending on the season.

Providing easy access to the Brisbane CBD, New Farm and Fortitude Valley, couples choosing Saint Mary’s often choose a nearby restaurant or hotel for their wedding reception. On our way to join the guests, we’ll go via some of my favourite nearby streets for the bridal party photo shoot.
