Remembrance Day is a special day in the calendar. As a young child, I remember buying a poppy and wearing it proudly at school, there would be a minute silence at 11am.
2009 was a year I lived with my family in Europe. Home exchanging for the year, we met so many wonderful people and made many new friends.
Our travels included a spending the month of November in Luxembourg. On Remembrance Day 2009, we visited the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial. This cemetery was established late December 1944 by the 609th Quartermaster Company of the U.S. Third Army as Allied Forces were repelled the enemy’s desperate Ardennes Offensive, a critical battle of World War II. Luxembourg was the headquarters for General George S. Patton’s U.S. Third Army. General Patton is buried here.
On arrival at the cemetery, we were greeted by thick fog. The Remembrance Ceremony got underway at 11am, being the burial place for General Paton, descendants of his were in attendance.
Having the opportunity to visit such this cemetery on such a special day was a very moving experience. Thinking of all the servicemen who had given their lives fighting for what they believed in was very humbling.
The images here are some I captured during the Service. I was thrilled to receive AIPP awards for these images.
This Remembrance Day, take a moment to stop and thank all those who gave their lives so that we may live a wonderful life.
